Hi! I’m Scott James Smith, also known as SJS or Scott James. Home is currently Chicago, IL.

I grew up in St. Louis, MO, where in a defining moment at 13 years old, I discovered that I was a theatre artist. Thus began a journey that has taken me through Indiana University, Webster University’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts, New York City, Chicago, and more! I earned my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre in Webster Groves, where I learned lifelong lessons and made lifelong friends. After spending some time living in NYC, traveling out of town for contracts here and there, I decided to relocate to Chicago to check out the vibrant theatre scene I’d heard so much about.

I’ve come to love the balance of city hustle-bustle and midwestern charm. Theatre is indeed alive and well and living in Chicago, IL! I’ve gotten the chance to work with some passionate artists, and I’m blown away by the dedication to craft. I can’t wait to continue discovering all this community has to offer. I’ve also learned to appreciate my winter boots and a nice pair of gloves.

Here’s to us! Who’s like us? Damn few…

- Mary, Charley, Frank

The kind of theatre that interests me is theatre that challenges our preconceived notion of a situation or feeling or relationship. I’m drawn to protagonists with flaws and antagonists with redeemability. As a theatre artist, it’s my perspective, my view of the world that I want to share; I want to help people to think outside of themselves, to see that there is no “right” view, and to realize that every single person’s experience is different than the person next to them. That’s the art I love to consume. That’s the art I love to make.

 Much love,

Scott James
